Hi Richard: I was a Combat Engineer Co. located at Phu Hiep near Tuy Hoa. We were attached to the 39th Engineers in 1967 briefly than the 299 Engineer Battalion. I was in Viet Nam Sept. 1967 thru Oct. 1968. My Company virtually worked all over corp area II. Your pictures bring back alot of memories. I was eventually shot down in a helio doing road and bridge classification for the 173'rd Airborne. I am currently recieving 100% disability due to that injury. I later served as 11 Bravo, and 19 Delta Cavalry Scout in two other Army tours. But it is my time as a Combat Engineer that I treasure the most. We were the tightest group of guys. I am still in contact with guys from my Viet Nam platoon. We are Buddies for life, talk to each other every holiday etc: Please write. I am interested if you rember us at Phu Hiep. Although we were also at Dak To, Ple Ku, Bong Song, Vung Tau, Ban Me Tuy and many other places I can't rember the names. Goodbye for now brothers, you are not forgotten. You can write me at Grashoper4u@aol.com any time. I would like to chat. Goodbye Pat Blev.

I used this site at first to get the day my wife was born [Monday 23-11-1967]. Sorry for the weak excuse; but in doing so I stumbled on your diary, and then found it a good insight into a real live account of a soldier's life.

Great site. Couldn't believe it when I saw Mike Male's picture on the home page. I joined D company (3rd Platoon) in April 1968. Last time I saw Mike he was with S-2 as Recon Sgt. Often wondered what happened to him and if he went back to Canada. Once again, great site. Thank you. Morris Bealmer

Hi. My name is Lou Perches, I was with the 39th Combat Engr's from Jul 67- Aug 68. I first came in country assinged to the 554th float br company. I was then transfered to HHQ company when one of the pay clerks rotated home. At this time the 39th was stationed north of Chu Lai just outside of a small village called An Thuon. Around Sept. or Oct we moved the entire unit to the backside of Mac XII Marine air base. We sat right off of highway 1 and the airfield to our back. I was then transfered to Co D. Headed south to LZ Dottie. We were at LZ Dottie during the Tet offensive in 68. It is great to see something about the 39th Combat Engr unit. It has gotten lost in all the shuffle during the formation of the Americal division in Nov of 67. I hope to hear from some of the guys that where either with HHQ Personnel, or Co D HHQ Platoon. Some of the names, John Jordan, Steve Sokol, Steve Carlson. E-mail: lperches@portpack.com

Steve Brill here. Great web site. I was in HHC, 39th Combat Engineers from November 1970 to December 1971. The unit stood down in October and November 1970, with most people reassigned or sent home. I remained, moving up to 45th Group HQ in Da Nang, and became mailman after we discovered several bags of unforwarded mail (I had been in S3 Operations). It took me a couple of weeks to take care of the mail - hope everyone got their stuff. I remember driving my boss down to Quang Ngai to visit Co. B, and the effort to put up some buildings and a road that wouldn't wash out near My Lai. I also remember driving up to visit Co.D near Tam Ky - I think they were fixing routes 531 & 535. The MPs at Chu Lai would let us bring up Igloo coolers that we filled with cans of soda and ice and brought out to the work sites. The S3, Captain Silvernale, was cool about that, and even helped pay for the soda and ice. Hi to John Sester, Terry Studley, Mark Crawford, where ever you are. And hi to Hugh Silvernale, a decent guy for an officer. E-mail: steve.brill@ecolab.com

I'm Warren Lucas, Nam May 68 69, wounded twice, both on road 535 between Triple Culverts and Ross. We were at Ross at the second TET in February 69. Convoy was ambushed at Triple culverts. 7 vehicles went up at once with command det mines and RPGs. Again in May 69 convoy ambushed again just west of triple culverts just past last vill after the culverts. There was an 8 inch gun that blew up there. Maybe one of you guys saw it there. Killed gun crew and we picked up driver blown in two and gunner who was on fire. Me and squad leader tried to pick him up but 8 inch rounds started cooking off and blew us back each time. Sorry guys. Didn't mean to bring back all this. Web address: cplcrdnce@webtv.net

RB, I was browsing thru the internet for pictures of Nui Dang and Duc Pho and came accross your web site. I was a Marine on top of Nui Dang from Nov66-Mar67, then was at the base of the hill when the Army relieved us in April67. Most of my pictures were lost before I rotated back to the states so I was looking for a little nostalgia. Thanks for the trip. George Crumbley, Spanish Fort, AL.

Thanks for the great memory stirring photos. I was a heavy equipment mechanic in HHC, 70th CBT ENGR BN, Ban Me Thout from 9/68 - 9/69. Many memories are still as vivd as the day they happened. I really remember the red laterite soil that permiated my skin so bad that when I went on R&R I had to endure three steam baths and three tub baths before I was considered clean enough. I still left a ring after the third tub bath. I also remember how slippery the red mud was when it rained. I was also in one of the largest convoys, if not the largest, to leave Cam Rahn Bay. As I remember it, the three pics of the blown up 5-ton on Route 535 were from a booby trapped bomb. I never went on mine sweep with A. Co. so... how come I can say I was standing about 20 feet from thet truck when it went up? The driver lost an ear and had some minor burns. The worst injury was a SSgt that got soaked with burning diesel fuel when the tanks on the truck went up. Myself and another rolled him on the ground to put out the fire. We had taken a break to eat a bite, and I was facing away from the truck eating c-rations when I found myself flying thru the air, landing running away from the truck, c-rations still in my hands. Since we were a long ways from Baldy here, and we didn't always get all the way there on mine sweep, I believe we had to leave that truck there for several days. The bit about A. Co., I can't remember. Bob Daniel Medic HHC/D. Co. 02/67 to 01/68

Outstanding website. I landed at Chu Lai, 7 May 1965. My unit, Bravo Co, 3rd Engineers, III Marine Amphibious Force with Navy SeaBees (MCB 10) built the original SATS airfield, roads, strongback tents, and the hospital. Your pics of the area look familiar, although they were taken about two years later. Good job. John Booker, Florida.

I enjoyed looking at the pictures. I was there in 1967. My name is Clarence R.Taylor. I found out about this site from Jeff May whom I served with over there. I was in D-7-2. We landed by boat near Tuy Hoa Feb 22,1967, then we hit the beach near Duc Pho in April and built a road to Duc Pho and put pcp on the airstrip there. We also built a wooden bridge. When I left over there we were opening up Highway 7 toward Laos in Jan 1968. My email address is: rusty@chartertn.net. Thanks for the web site Richard.
