Hi. My name is Gary Farris. I was with the 19th Eng. Bn. 137th Eng. Co. We worked on QL1 from Qui Nhon to Da Nang, from May 1967 to May 1968. I left in 1968 and went to Fort Hood, Texas. I have been trying to find out more about the unit I was with but so far unable to. I ran across your web page and thought maybe you could help me. Thanks. Gary Farris. Randy Ankney Supply Sgt. Company D 39th Eng. I arrived in country Dec. 1967 after hitch hiking from Anchorage Alaska where I missed my plane which had been grounded by a snow storm. I was origanally supposed to be in Cam Rhan Bay, but the medevac I hopped in Japan, took me to Ben Hoa where my orders were changed and I wound up with the 39th. I wish I had pictures but your site has brought back memories, some good and some bad. One memorable moment some of you may recall was the trip by transport ship from somewhere south to just north of Da Nang. It was about an eighteen hour ride, and most of us got sea sick. I've lived in Alaska now going on twenty years. I'd like to hear from anyone that served with me.

I served as company medic Spring and Summer of 71. Have trouble remembering names but never forgot the events. I think I remember Baily. He was driver whose Proof truck hit a mine, the only other one I remember from Kentucky, he got his hand blown off when a VC threw a grenade in his Road Grader on the road to LZ Young. I rememberd that the casualty was from Island Kentucky, but like I said the names are all a blur and we had several men get seriously wounded from mines and other attacks. The site brings back a lot of memories. Randall Bauer, SP5, Medic with D Co, 39th. Savonburg, Kansas

My name is General Albert Nolan Campbell. I was in D company, 39th from Nov 67 to Nov 68. Your photos brought back some memories. I remember the truck hitting the mine and the body going through the air. I was just getting ready to eat some peaches and pound cake, my favorite C rations. The blast filled them full of dirt. I did without dessert that day. Glad I found your site!

USAF SGT 903rd Medevac assigned to Duc Pho 1969. We moved many of your wounded by c123 and C7s. It was good working for you. Or should I say gradefying. We were there when the rockets or morters hit the hospital, bad day. Good luck to you all. Be caerful, they might be re calling us again. For southwest asia.

THANX FOR THE MAPS OF CHU LAI AND LZ BALDY. I WAS IN COUNTRY JUNE '67 - MAY '68. I WAS PART OF A PLATOON OF COMBAT MP'S WITH THE 196th LIGHT INFANTRY BRIGADE. WE PULLED RIVER PATROL NORTH OF CHU LAI AND I WAS ASSIGNED TO THE BOONIES TO GO OUT ON PATROLS, SWEEPS, SEARCH & DESTROYS WITH THE INFANTRY. I SPENT MANY MEMORABLE MOMENTS AT HILLS 69, 63, 406, 488, LZ BALDIE, CAMP EVANS, CHU LAI AND TAM KY. I REMEMBER LEAVING CAMP EVANS IN MAY '68 THINKING OUR HEAVILY LOADED C-130 WOULD NEVER MAKE IT OFF THE GROUND. WE WERE BEING ROCKETED BY NVA REGULARS OPERATING IN THE MOUNTAINS JUST TO OUR WEST (EDGE OF AUSHAU VALLEY ). PIECES OF THE RUNWAY WERE BEING BLOWN UP AND HITTING THE SIDES OF THE PLANE WHILE WE WERE TAXING TO AND GOING DOWN THE RUNWAY. I REMEMBER THE CREW CHIEF SCRAMBLING TO GET THE TAIL RAMP UP IN TIME FOR THE C130 TO LIFT OFF. YOU COULD SEE THE RUNWAY TO THE REAR BEING HIT AND PIECES FLYING EVERY WHERE. I WAS SANDWICHED BETWEEN A JEEP AND A 75 MM HOWITZER THAT WERE BARELY TIED DOWN. WHEN WE GOT IN THE AIR EVERY GRUNT ON BOARD LET OUT A GREAT CHEER AND APPLAUSE FOR THE CREW. WELL, THANX FOR LISTENING. BOB HITCHNER ( HORRIBLE HITCH ) bobhitch320@hotmail.com

I served with Charlie Co. during 67 & 68. I stumbled on to your web site by accident while trying to find old maps of South Viet Nam to see where I spent my time. The maps were for tourists which didn't fit my mind frame of the country much less help me locate any of the LZ's I was at. I decided to look under Americal Div., 39th CBT Engrs & low & behold I found your web page, at the bottom of a page I saw the name of one of my hooch buddies (Joe Dooley).
As I looked thru your pictures I found pictures of guys that although I had not forgotten they had surely been placed on the back burner. This morning I dug out a box of letters & pictures that I hadn't seen in many years, I have been on the computer communicating with Dooley all morning & now going into the afternoon making it seem like it was only yesterday that we were all together.
I was a heavy equipment operator with Charlie Co. (bull-dozer) but also drove a 5-ton dump & did a little mine sweeping. Looking at your pictures made what we were doing over there seem a little more worthwhile in my eyes now. I was drafted which didn't make my attitude none for the good as far as the military was concerned, I did my job, covered my butt & tried to the best of my ability to do the same for the men that were around me.
Your site gave me & hopefully my family a sense of what we were really there for! I remember Snipers Gap, the Monsoons & the people that I grew to distrust almost instantly. Your site is real good & it is disappointing that spam has made you close it down. I would be proud if you could add me to the list of those who found you sooner & maybe someone will see my name as I did & make contact with one of us.
I have pictures but am not sure if I will be able to scan them where they are of the quality that you have posted.
God Speed & Thank-You for your service.
Sincerely,
William L. (Bill) Ray
39th CBT Engr, Charlie Co., 3rd Platoon, 3rd Squad/1967-1968
