I was reading your diary and looking at photos.  I was with the 3/4 Cav from Sept66 to Sept67.  We were at LZ Bronco at the same time.  On June 5th we hit a mine on QL 1 after a mine sweep.  Was reading your Diary and see that you had that day off.  Would like to find someone that might remember that day.  Or how I could find a record of a Daily Journal.  Rick Gardner

Hey Rick. On November 1, 2010 I received an e-mail from Wade Johnson. He was there when this mine exploded. Below are his comments -

"I was involved with that incident, that morning in fact I called in the Medivac, and popped smoke to get them to land, at our location. The mine went off on their jeep, that was the lead vehicle in their convoy going North. We had finished the sweep, and I was driving the lead vehicle in our convoy, heading South.

Their jeep hit the mine with their right front wheel and that jeep was thrown completely over the top of our jeep and landed up-side down, on the left side of the road (as you where facing North), with the four guys who where riding in it three of them, where KIA's, right on the spot and I'm not sure about the fourth guy. Their people loaded them into the Medivac and we traced the wire, back into the bushes and found the detonator, that had set off the explosion.

After I had regained my composure after being that close to an explosion of that magnitude I realized my ability to hear, out of my left ear was non-existent. I went to the LZ Aide station, once we got back. And the Doc there said I had a cracked ear drum, and he cleaned up the minor shrapnel wounds I had received from the blast, on the left side of my face, neck and left arm. In a few days my hearing began to return.

Hey Rick. Wade Johnson tried to contact you at the e-mail address: rickstunts@aol.com but could not get through. Rick, if you would like to contact Wade his e-mail is: runnonmt@earthlink.net

Surfing the net I came across your photos of "Goin Home". The photo of Chu Lai airbase titled "Spy Planes" are of Navy Sqdn VW-1, EC121 Super Connies parked in front of the building at the north end of runway at Chu Lai.   The building behind the planes housed both VW-1 and NASU (Navy Air Support Unit). I was with NASU station there from Feb. 1968 to Oct. 1969.

More info on VW-1 Can be found at their website:http://vw1assoc.tripod.com/nasu_vw1_68_70.html

If you look at the website there are some photos I submitted listed under "NASU Chu Lai"..

Thanks for the memories, Merry Christmas...

Terry Hall
